EXPERIENCING BRISBANE BY THE RIVER

I would drive and walk by the Brisbane River every day, I never thought I’d paddle down the river. The idea of paddling alongside Brisbane’s iconic skyline, tracing the beautiful shorelines of Kangaroo point and South Bank seemed surreal – and I can now say the experience definitely lived up to my expectations.

It was a baking Brisbane afternoon when a friend and I decided to try out a Riverlife Kayak Hire. We arrived at the historical Naval stores shed, neatly nestled in the cliffs of Kangaroo Point, where we were instantly greeted by a relaxed aura and a hum of adventure. The smiling staff, uplifting music, and rustic vibe transcended us both into a summer holiday mood.

Check in was easy, and we felt confident to hit the water after a quick instructional briefing. All questions and concerns were answered, and we were even offered a secure locker hire ($3) to place our belongings in. They had phone cases for sale, so we grabbed one of those to keep our devices dry while we got the best selfie in Brisbane.

Before we knew it, we were off and away with the freedom to navigate the river at our own pace. Having kayaked several times in the past, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of Riverlife’s kayaks. The kayak sat well on the water, was well balanced, easy to paddle and was conveniently fitted with a water bottle holder and a comfortable padded seat.

Our kayak adventure led us to South Bank and back around to the impressive Story Bridge. Gliding through the river allowed us to take in the bustling city from a different, more peaceful perspective. Along our journey we discovered new sections of the river shoreline, and had many opportunities to capture the perfect Instagram shot!

The time leisurely pasted by, and we both could have continued kayaking well into the twilight and evening. Upon return, we were in fact informed that on Friday and Saturday evenings Riverlife offers a sunset and night kayak tour, both with the option to add food and drinks to round off the experience. To me, this tour sounded like the perfect experience when needing to show off Brisbane to visiting friends and family (or perhaps a date?) – something I will definitely be doing next time I have visitors!

Overall, I could not have asked for a better way to spend a summers afternoon in the city. The staff at Riverlife made the experience seamless, while the unique experience and beautiful, diverse scenery spoke for itself.

When looking for something different or relaxing to do, whether for a solo escape or an outing with friends, I would highly recommend a Riverlife Kayak hire/tour – and I know I will definitely be returning again soon!
