Brisbane is one good-looking city.
But seeing it as golden hour hits and watching the sun melt over the horizon into a cotton candy concoction of pinks, purples and reds… that’s something else. Read on to find out where you can snag the best seats in Brisbane to watch the sunset!
Kangaroo Point Cliffs
29 River Terrace, Kangaroo Point QLD 4169
Arguably the best place in Brisbane to watch the sun go down! The cliffs of Kangaroo Point put on an absolute show. Watch the sun go down as kayakers meander down the river and the city twinkles to life. From the top of the cliffs, you can bag a BBQ spot with unobstructed views of the city. Alternatively, down by the cliff’s base, you can set up shop on a nice grassy patch by the river and nestle yourself in amongst the funky riverside sculptures. If you’re looking to get your adrenaline pumping before the sunset, catch the Brissy views from a more unique perspective, as in, halfway down the cliffs! Rock climb or abseil with Riverlife and you’ll finish in time to wind down for the sunset.
Brisbane Lookout, Mt Coot-tha
1012 Sir Samuel Griffith Dr, Toowong QLD 4066
Pack a picnic blanket, grab your best pals and head to Mount Coot-tha! You can choose to drive up the windy roads or trek up to the summit– just bring a torch if you choose the latter as you might end up having to bush bash your way down otherwise. From the lookout, you’ll see Brisbane’s entire skyline light up against the gorgeous backdrop of the sunset. The observation deck is a hot-spot for date-night and star gazers alike, so be sure to get there early if you want to secure yourself some prime real estate.
If you’re game, head up to the summit before sunrise to watch the sun crawl up and over the city. You’ll undoubtedly be joined by a number of guys and gals clad in activewear to get their perfect Instagram shot!
Kayaking Along Brisbane River
Naval Stores Kangaroo Point Cliffs Drive, Kangaroo Point QLD 4169
Take in the sensational views of the city as the Brown Snake glows and reflects around you. Paddle your way under Brisbane’s unique inner-city bridges and be sure to look up at the glistening buildings surrounding you. Opt for a Sunday Sunset paddle with Riverlife and be greeted with a shared dip platter accompanied by cold beer, wine or drink of your choice when you return to shore. Or if you’re a seafood lover, join us for a Friday night Paddle and Prawns! Finish up your glide along Brisbane River with a bucket of fresh king prawns and an assortment of drinks. Bookings are essential as our riverside marquee and all-inclusive packages are hard to resist and often book out!
170 Main St, Kangaroo Point QLD 4169
Want to watch the sun set from the ultimate sunset spot?! Book yourself in for a Twilight Climb with Story Bridge Adventure Climb! You’ll get a 360-degree view of the glowing horizon, with the twinkling city on your right and the river curling around either side of you. As you descend, the ever-changing multi-coloured LED lights atop the bridge will make for great pictures and depending on your climb package, you can finish up with a great feed from nearby eateries. If you’re OK with heights, this is an unbeatable spot to watch the sun dip away for the day!
Wilson Outlook Reserve
231 Bowen Terrace, New Farm QLD 4005
See the dramatic views of Story Bridge and the city from a small grassy park perched on the cliffs of New Farm. One of Brisbane’s more secret sunset spots, Wilson Outlook is frequented by locals looking to capture the whole Story Bridge in one frame, with the city glistening behind it. What’s better is that with the recent opening of the Howards Smith Wharves precinct right underneath, you can follow up with dinner and drinks at one of the many dining precincts dotted along the heritage listed riverfront promenade. My recommendation is to get in quick as this spot won’t be secret for long!
